Learning Outcomes

Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • USI
  • Fitness to participate
  • Enclosed footwear, long pants, long sleeves
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a moderate level of mobility, strength and stamina, including the ability to handle firefighting equipment safely under simulated emergency conditions.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

  • Lift and carry fire extinguisher (up to approx. 9kg)
  • Use extinguishers repeatedly, including aiming, squeezing, and sweeping actions
  • Unroll, carry and rewind a fire hose reel while directing water at a target
  • Unfold and correctly use a fire blanket, including approaching a fire safely and crouching if required
  • Stand, walk and move safely during simulated fire scenarios

Key overall physical demands:

  • Lifting and carrying fire extinguishers (~9kg)
  • Unrolling, carrying, and rewinding fire hose reels (moderate strength and stamina)
  • Stooping, crouching, bending when using fire blankets or extinguishers at low height
  • Standing and moving in simulated fire scenarios
  • Manual dexterity for operating extinguishers, nozzles, and fire blankets
  • Ability to work safely in simulated smoke/fire training environments
