Handle Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Substances Initial Spill Response Combo

• Requirements for working with dangerous goods and/or hazardous substances
• Site incident procedures including incident reporting and emergency procedures
• Correct handling techniq
• Ability to evaluate and assess a spill incident
• Ability to identify the hazards arising from a spill incident including raising the alarm and appropriate response to control a spill incident using specific spill kits
• Ability to control the spill incident including confinement, equipment selection and use of specific spill kits
• Ability to clear the spill incident area, monitor and handover to specialist response personnel
• Ability to conclude the spill incident control including reporting procedures and debriefing

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• TLID0021 Store and handle dangerous goods and hazardous substances
• MSMWHS205 Control minor incidents

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a moderate level of physical fitness, mobility, and coordination, as students will be involved in practical activities simulating the handling of hazardous substances, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and response to spills or chemical incidents.

To successfully complete this course, students must be physically able to:

• Lift, carry, and handle containers or materials (up to approximately 10–15kg) safely using correct manual handling techniques.
• Wear and work in PPE, including gloves, safety glasses, coveralls, and respirators, which may restrict movement and visibility.
• Move safely through work areas, including walking, bending, and reaching while identifying, isolating, or containing hazardous materials.
• Operate spill response equipment, such as absorbent materials, barriers, and disposal containers.
• Perform simulated spill containment and clean-up tasks, which may involve kneeling, crouching, and sustained physical activity.
• Follow safety procedures and communicate clearly during simulated emergency or contamination scenarios.
• Complete written or electronic reporting following spill response or handling exercises.

Key overall physical demands:

• Lifting and carrying items up to approximately 15kg
• Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and reaching during spill response tasks
• Wearing and working in PPE for extended periods
• Manual dexterity to operate response and containment equipment
• Clear verbal communication during emergency simulations
