• HAZMAT emergency response procedures
• HAZMAT incident leadership
• Personal protective equipment: splash suits, gas suits decontamination and HOT/WARM/COLD zone establishment
• HAZMAT emergency action guides, HAG sheets etc
• First aid treatment for HAZMAT incidents

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• PUAFIR308 Employ personal protection at a hazardous materials incident
• PUAFIR306 Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials at an incident
• PUAFIR324 Render hazardous materials incidents safe
• RIIERR301E Respond to work site incidents

Pre-Requisite Requirements:

PUAFIR207 Operate Breathing Apparatus – Open Circuit (or equivalent)

FSA Entry Requirements:

• USI
• Fitness to participate
• Participants must be clean shaven, no facial hair that may affect facial seal as per Australian Standards. Click here for further information
• Site appropriate PPE include fire rated PPE and footwear
• Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
• Evidence of each participant holding the above competencies must be provided prior to entry into the course.

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a high level of physical fitness, stamina, and resilience, particularly for working in chemical suits and breathing apparatus under stressful emergency conditions.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Wear full chemical protective clothing and breathing apparatus (up to approx. 20kg combined).
• Move, bend, and work while fully encapsulated in protective suits with restricted vision and ventilation.
• Carry and use spill kits, detection/monitoring devices, and containment equipment.
• Set up and work within decontamination systems, which may involve scrubbing, spraying, and stooping.
• Walk or crawl in simulated hazardous environments while carrying equipment.
• Work safely in hot, humid, noisy, and low-visibility conditions.
• Assist with cleaning, maintaining, and stowing PPE and response equipment after incidents

Key overall physical demands:

• High fitness and stamina to work in full chemical protective clothing and SCBA (up to 20kg load)
• Manual handling of equipment (spill kits, detection gear, containers, hoses, rescue equipment)
• Repetitive bending, stooping and kneeling during spill response and decontamination
• Tolerance to environmental stressors – heat, restricted mobility, low visibility, noise
• Endurance – scenarios may require prolonged periods in PPE with limited ventilation
• Dexterity – operating instruments, radios, and tools while encumbered by gloves and suits
