Initial Spill Response Training

• Ability to evaluate and assess a spill incident
• Ability to identify the hazards arising from a spill incident including raising the alarm and appropriate response to control a spill incident using specific spill kits
• Ability to control the spill incident including confinement, equipment selection and use of specific spill kits
• Ability to clear the spill incident area, monitor and handover to specialist response personnel
• Ability to conclude the spill incident control including reporting procedures and debriefing

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• MSMWHS205 Control minor incidents

• Clothing appropriate to site requirements
• Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a basic to moderate level of mobility and strength, with the ability to act calmly and safely while wearing PPE during spill response activities.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Walk to spill locations and move safely around the affected area.
• Bend, stoop, and crouch when deploying absorbent materials or barriers.
• Lift and handle spill kit contents and contaminated materials (up to approx. 10kg).
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, safety glasses, and respirators.
• Communicate clearly when raising alarms and handing over to supervisors or response teams.
• Complete simple incident and hazard report forms.

Key overall physical demands:

• Manual handling of spill response equipment (absorbents, barriers, PPE, up to 10kg)
• Mobility to walk, bend, stoop, crouch, and kneel when deploying or cleaning spills
• Use of PPE – gloves, goggles, respirators, protective clothing
• Moderate stamina to sustain spill response until specialist responders arrive if required
• Communication to raise alarms and hand over to incident response personnel
• Light admin tasks – completing hazard reports and incident documentation
