Our Inspect and Test Fire Blankets and Fire Extinguishers course provides the skills and knowledge required to inspect and test a range of portable firefighting equipment within your own workplace. You'll learn how to install, inspect, test and tag fire safety equipment in accordance with routine workplace inspection requirements.

The training includes both theory and practical components to ensure a thorough understanding of workplace-based inspection processes and compliance with relevant standards

This course is ideal for:

  • Technicians responsible for fire safety equipment within own workplace
  • Employees tasked with workplace safety inspections
  • Anyone needing to understand fire safety maintenance and compliance

Note:
Successful completion of this course enables students to carry out inspection and testing activities within their own workplace only. It does not qualify participants to operate as a licensed or third-party service technician, or to provide inspection and testing services outside of their organisation. Additional training and / or licensing may be required for this scope of work.

Course Content

6 monthly and annual inspection and testing of fire extinguishers, in accordance with Australian Standards, including:

  • water
  • dry chemical
  • carbon dioxide
  • wet chemical
  • foam

6 monthly and annual inspection and testing of fire blankets in accordance with Australian Standards.

  • Maintenance tag updating and recording
  • Tools and equipment
  • Managing faulty equipment
  • Identifying and documenting of non-compliances
  • All information to be recorded in a post-course assessment package.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

  • CPPFES2020 Conduct routine inspection and testing of fire extinguishers and fire blankets

Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

N/A

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • USI
  • Fitness to participate
  • Enclosed footwear, long pants, ideally long sleeves
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a basic to moderate level of mobility, strength, and dexterity, with safe manual handling techniques to check and service firefighting equipment.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

  • Lift and handle fire extinguisher of various types (between approx. 2kg and 15kg)
  • Bend, stoop, and reach to check fire equipment, tags and signage
  • Inspect and refold fire blankets from their wall containers
  • Walk through facilities to carry out inspections in multiple locations
  • Complete inspection records and service reports accurately

Key overall physical demands:

  • Manual handling of extinguishers ranging from 2kg (small CO2) to 15kg (large dry chemical or foam)
  • Repetitive lifting, bending, stooping, and reaching to inspect equipment in multiple locations
  • Grip and hand strength for checking seals, pins, and gauges
  • Mobility for walking across sites/facilities to complete inspections
  • Fine motor skills for writing inspection reports, certificates, and rectification notices
