Course Content

  • Permit legislative requirements
  • Completing a review of the scope of work
  • Selecting the most appropriate permit for the work task
  • Liaising with the work team to review the JSA/risk assessment & document hazard controls on the work permit
  • Isolation procedures
  • Determining the appropriate conditions for the permit
  • Raising, authorising & issuing the necessary permit
  • Monitoring compliance with permit conditions and the JSA/ risk assessment
  • Reporting any indiscretions or violations of permit conditions as required
  • Managing the permit process, e.g. extensions, handovers, changes etc
  • Signing off work permits on completion of work
  • Ensuring that workplace procedures are complied with for the entire permit process

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

  • MSMWHS201 Conduct hazard analysis
  • MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit

Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • A verifiable USI
  • Suitable fitness to participate (see below for details)
  • Safety PPE and footwear
  • Sufficient language, literacy, digital and numeracy skills to complete the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a basic level of mobility and stamina, with most activities focused on documentation, observation, and communication rather than heavy physical exertion.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

  • Walk through work areas to inspect hazards and isolations.
  • Bend or stoop occasionally to check equipment or controls.
  • Wear standard PPE as required for site access.
  • Complete documents such as Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and permits.
  • Stand and communicate clearly with others during permit briefings and observations.

Key overall physical demands

  • Walking and standing for inspections, observations, and site checks
  • Bending/stooping to identify hazards or check isolations
  • Wearing PPE as required for site conditions
  • Light manual handling (signage, documents, locks/tags)
  • Administrative work – permits, JHAs, and reporting
  • Clear communication – hazard discussions, toolbox talks, and team briefings
