Course Content

Course Component 1 (eLearning):

An overview of mental health problems and mental health crisis. Content covered includes:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems
  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviour

Course Component 2:

Course Component 2 provides course students with an opportunity to revise content covered in Component 1 and to consolidate the application of this content with the development of practical skills in a group environment. It provides students with the opportunity to:

  • Revise the eLearning content and the MHFA Action Plan
  • Clarify any points of uncertainty
  • Apply the MHFA Action Plan to relevant scenarios
  • Discuss and reflect where to from now; in using mental health first aid skills
  • Develop a self-care plan to maintain good mental health.

Learning Outcomes

This is non-accredited training. On successful completion of the training you will receive a Certificate of Attendance

Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

Pre-requisites:

N/A

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • Completion of Self-paced interactive eLearning (approx. 5-7 hours).
  • Once your enrolment has been approved, Fire & Safety Australia (FSA) will send you a link via email which provides you with access to the learning resources, including the manual. You will be able to begin the eLearning as soon as you receive your link.
  • Your classroom session must be attended within 3 months of the completion of your eLearning.
  • Course students are required to be Australian residents and over the age of 18

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a low to moderate level of physical ability, focusing primarily on communication, observation, and interaction skills rather than physical tasks. The training is delivered in a classroom, blended format and online and involves simulated discussions, case studies, and role-plays relating to mental health crisis situations.

To successfully complete this course, participants should be able to:

  • Participate actively in group discussions, scenarios, and role-plays involving simulated mental health situation
  • Listen attentively and respond empathetically to others in emotionally sensitive contexts
  • Communicate clearly and calmly, both verbally and non-verbally, during simulated crisis conversations
  • Read, interpret, and complete written materials, including case studies, learner resources, and short written activities
  • Sit or stand for extended periods during classroom sessions or presentations
  • Engage respectfully and confidentially with other participants during discussions involving sensitive or distressing topics

Key overall physical demands:

  • Low physical demand, with most activities conducted seated in a classroom environment
  • Sustained concentration and engagement during interactive learning and group work
  • Emotional resilience and composure when discussing mental health conditions, crisis situations, or personal experiences
  • Clear verbal communication to demonstrate understanding of the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan and apply it in simulated settings
