This SafeWork NSW approved course is designed for elected Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Deputy HSRs in NSW who need regulator-approved training. It helps HSRs and deputy HSRs review and expand on what they learned in their Initial HSR course, including understanding WHS legislation, how it applies to their role, and gaining additional skills and knowledge about their powers and functions.

Under section 72 of the NSW WHS Act 2011, an employer, if requested, must allow an elected HSR to attend a HSR training course that is approved by the regulator (SafeWork NSW) and chosen by the HSR in consultation with their employer. Fire & Safety Australia is approved by SafeWork NSW to deliver the NSW HSR Initial & Refresher Training Courses.

ABOUT THE COURSE

This course provides comprehensive training for Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Deputy HSRs, covering key aspects of workplace health and safety as outlined in the WHS Act 2011. It equips participants with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively fulfil their roles and responsibilities.

  • Effective worker consultation processes
  • Forming and managing workgroups

Course Content

  • WHS Act 2011 legislative framework
  • The role and functions of WorkSafe and their interaction with HSRs
  • Duties and responsibilities of PCBUS, officers, workers and other parties under the legislation
  • The nature of the consultation process with workers as required of the primary PCBU by the Act
  • The purpose and formation of a workgroup within the workplace
  • Health & Safety Committees (HSCs)
  • The entitlements, rights and protections of an elected HSR / Deputy HSR
  • Using negotiation, communication and problem solving skills and strategies as a HSR to represent a workgroup and to resolve WHS issues
  • Risk management and the use of risk controls, including the duties and responsibilities of various PC8Us under the legislation
  • How HSRs can contribute to risk management in the workplace
  • Provisional Improvement Notices (PIN) and the right to cease, or direct the cessation of unsafe work

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the training you will receive a Certificate of Attendance

Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

Pre-requisites:

Photo ID must be presented to the trainer at the commencement of the course, as per SafeWork NSW Conditions of Approval

Provide evidence of completing the NSW HSR 5 Day Initial training course after 01 Jan 2013.

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • Fitness to participate
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
