This SafeWork NSW approved course is designed for elected Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and Deputy HSRs in NSW who need regulator-approved training. This course is designed to help you gain the knowledge and skills needed to effectively promote and ensure the health and safety of your work group.

Under section 72 of the NSW WHS Act 2011, an employer, if requested, must allow an elected HSR to attend a HSR training course that is approved by the regulator (SafeWork NSW) and chosen by the HSR in consultation with their employer. Fire & Safety Australia is approved by SafeWork NSW to deliver the NSW HSR Initial & Refresher Training Courses.

This course is ideal for:

  • Supervisors responsible for worker safety
  • Managers overseeing workplace health and safety
  • HSRs needing to fulfil their training requirements under the NSW WHS Act 2011

This course provides comprehensive training for Health & Safety Representatives (HSRs) under the WHS Act 2011. It covers the essential knowledge and skills needed to promote and ensure workplace health and safety.

  • Duties and responsibilities of employers, officers, workers, and others
  • Effective consultation processes with workers
  • Forming and managing workplace workgroups
  • Roles and functions of Health & Safety Committees (HSCs)

Course Content

  • WHS Act 2011 legislative framework
  • Duties and responsibilities of PCBUS, officers, workers and other parties under the legislation
  • The nature of the consultation process with workers as required of the primary PCBU by the Act
  • The purpose and formation of a workgroup within the workplace
    Health & Safety Committees (HSCs)
  • The entitlements, rights and protections of an elected HSR / Deputy HSR
  • Using negotiation, communication and problem solving skills and strategies as a HSR to represent a workgroup and to resolve WHS issues
  • Risk management and the use of risk controls, including the duties and responsibilities of various PC8Us under the legislation
  • How HSRs can contribute to risk management in the workplace
  • Provisional Improvement Notices (PIN) and the right to cease, or direct the cessation of unsafe work

Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

Pre-Requisites:

Photo ID must presented to the trainer at the commencement of the course, as per SafeWork NSW Conditions of Approval.

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
