Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • USI
  • Fitness to participate
  • Appropriate safety footwear, long pants, long sleeves
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
  • Participants must be clean shaven, no facial hair that may affect facial seal as per AS/NZS 1715:2009. Click here for further information

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a high level of physical fitness, strength, and stamina, as well as the ability to remain calm and effective while wearing breathing apparatus under simulated emergency conditions.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

  • Wear and operate a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) weighing approx. 12–15kg.
  • Walk, crawl, bend, and stoop in simulated low-visibility and irrespirable environments.
  • Carry out simulated rescue tasks, including lifting or dragging a mannequin (20–30kg).
  • Work for extended periods while wearing SCBA, which restricts breathing and adds heat stress.
  • Clean, dry, and re-stow SCBA and face masks after use.
  • Complete basic reporting and debrief tasks.

Key overall physical demands

  • High physical demand due to working in SCBA (~15kg load) for extended periods
  • Manual handling of BA sets, cylinders, and rescue mannequins (up to 30kg)
  • Mobility and agility – crawling, bending, stooping in restricted/simulated environments
  • Stamina and endurance – sustained effort under heat, noise, and restricted ventilation
  • Dexterity – operating straps, valves, detectors, and communications while gloved
  • Tolerance to stress, heat, and simulated low-visibility conditions
