Perform Cable Pit/Trench/Excavation Rescue Training

• Selection and Inspection of rescue equipment and PPE
• Placement and inspection of rescue equipment
• Assessing and controlling hazards to rescuer, victim and others
• Isolation procedures where appropriate
• Maintaining Safe Approach Distances (SAD’s) appropriate to rescue from a cable pit / trench / excavation.
• Involvement of external emergency services as appropriate
• Practical demonstration of rescuing a person
• Removing victim / self to safe location / place of safety

On successful completion of this program, students will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• UETDRMP014 Perform cable pit / trench / excavation rescue

Pre-requisites:

To be awarded the current Unit of Competency: UETDRMP014 Perform cable pit / trench / excavation rescue, the below pre-requisites must be provided:

HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation:

Where the pre-requisite evidence, in the form of a Statement of Attainment or USI Transcript, is not provided, FSA will issue a Certificate of Attendance.

FSA Entry Requirements:

• A verifiable USI
• Fitness to participate declaration
• Safety PPE and footwear
• Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
• All pre-requisite unit requirements are met

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a very high level of fitness, strength, and mobility, with the ability to perform rescues in both vertical and horizontal confined environments under simulated emergency conditions.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Wear PPE and a rescue harness and possibly breathing apparatus (~15kg).
• Lift, carry, and set up rescue equipment such as tripods, stretchers, gas detectors, and ropes.
• Enter pits and trenches, which may involve crawling, bending, stooping, and kneeling.
• Rescue simulated casualties by lifting, dragging, or carrying mannequins (20–30kg).
• Perform CPR if required during casualty rescue.
• Work safely around simulated electrical hazards and maintain safe approach distances.
• Secure the site after training and clean, pack, and store rescue gear.

Key overall physical demands

• High level of physical strength and stamina – especially during trench/pit extrications and casualty handling
• Manual handling – BA sets, stretchers, rescue systems, and casualties (20–30kg mannequins)
• Mobility and agility – crawling, stooping, kneeling in trenches, climbing and working in pits
• Upper body strength and grip – rope handling, stretcher rigging, tripod/davit operations
• Tolerance – PPE, confined and hazardous spaces, electrical hazards, simulated stress conditions
• Dexterity – operating connectors, harnesses, gas detectors, and rescue kits
