Pre-requisites:

PUAFIR220 Respond to isolated structure fire Or PUAFIR203 Respond to urban fire (or equivalent)

• USI
• Fitness to participate declaration – this is a physically demanding training course
• Sufficient language, literacy & numeracy skills to complete the course
• Safety footwear and PPE clothing appropriate to site requirements
• Sufficient digital, language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
• Evidence of each student holding the pre-requisite (PUAFIR220 or PUAFIR203) must be provided prior to entry into the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a very high level of physical strength, stamina, grip, and mobility, as tasks are completed in full PPE/SCBA under simulated aviation fireground conditions.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:,/p>

• Wear full firefighting PPE and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
• Handle and operate hoses, nozzles, ladders, extinguishers, and forcible entry tools.
• Walk, kneel, stoop, and crawl in hot, smoky, or low-visibility environments.
• Control and apply firefighting foam during fuel, engine, wheel, or external fire scenarios.
• Enter an aircraft mock-up and perform casualty rescue, including lifting/dragging mannequins (20–30kg).
• Use radios, thermal imaging cameras, and other firefighting/incident response equipment.
• Clean, test, and stow firefighting and rescue equipment after use.
• Participate in incident debriefs and complete reports.

Key overall physical demands:

• Very high stamina and endurance – firefighting, SCBA work, hose handling, casualty rescue
• Manual handling – hoses, BA sets, cylinders (~10–15kg), casualty mannequins (~20–30kg), tools
• Upper body strength and grip – nozzle control, hose drag, forcible entry tools, casualty rescue
• Mobility and agility – walking, crawling, kneeling, stooping, climbing in smoke/heat environments
• Dexterity – SCBA valves, radios, TIC, reports, PPE adjustments
• Tolerance – heat, confined spaces, smoke simulation, PPE/SCBA stress
