Respond to Urban Fire Training

• Prepare to respond to an urban fire, including receiving and interpreting instructions
• Select, check, and use firefighting equipment and extinguishing media
• Conduct fire suppression activities in accordance with organisational procedures and safe work practices
• Operate as an effective member of a firefighting team under supervision
• Apply strategies and tactics such as exposure protection, containment, and extinguishment
• Monitor and react to fire and weather conditions during firefighting operations
• Carry out post-fire activities, including mop-up, patrol, and equipment maintenance
• Complete required documentation and reporting procedures following an incident

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• PUAFIR203 Respond to Urban Fire

Pre-requisite Requirements:

Students must provide evidence of holding the below unit of competency, this is required to be provided PRIOR to commencement of the course:

• PUAFIR207 Operate Breathing Apparatus - Open Circuit

As recommended by the Australian Standard AS1715:2009, FSA enforces a 'clean shaven' course entry policy for all courses that require the use of breathing apparatus,

Evidence of holding this unit of competency must be provided via email to admin@fsaus.com.au prior to course commencement. Without the above pre-requisite evidence for each student we will be unable to conduct the scheduled training as Nationally Recognised Training a Certificate of Attendance will be issued until the evidence is provided, alternatively the training may need to be re-scheduled to a later date which will attract further fees.

FSA Entry Requirements:

• A verifiable USI
• Fire rated PPE, head and eye protection, PLUS wildfire rated gloves
• Students are required to wear safety footwear, long sleeve shirts and long pants or overalls (site appropriate clothing, steel-cap boots and PPE). Participants may be refused entry where they attend without safety footwear.
• Suitable fitness to participate (see below for details)
• Sufficient language, literacy, digital and numeracy skills to complete the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a high level of physical strength, stamina, and resilience to safely participate in structural firefighting scenarios.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Wear full structural firefighting PPE and breathing apparatus (approx. 20kg combined)
• Walk, crawl, bend, and stoop while carrying hoses and firefighting tools
• Lift and operate fire extinguishers and drag or carry rescue mannequins
• Control hose lines and nozzles under pressure
• Work in simulated smoke-filled, heated, and confined environments
• Clean, carry, and re-stow firefighting hoes, SCBA, and equipment after use

Key overall physical demands:

• High fitness and endurance – prolonged work in heavy structural firefighting PPE with SCBA (~20kg total load)
• Manual handling – extinguishers, hoses, nozzles, tools, and rescue mannequins
• Repetitive bending, stooping, crawling – during search, rescue, and overhaul tasks
• Upper body strength – controlling hose lines under pressure
• Environmental stress – heat, smoke simulation, confined space entry, noise
• Mobility and balance – moving safely while encumbered by equipment
