Santos Module 49 Gas Detection Training

• Common chemical asphyxiants, including hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and hydrogen sulphide
• Common irritants and corrosives, including chlorine, ammonia and acid bases
• Common flammable gases, including acetylene, petroleum, methane, ethane, propane and butane narcotics (explosive range, upper and lower explosive limits)
• Exposure standards (time weighted average, short term exposure limits, peak limitation values, examination of toxic effect at the level of a range of flammable gases)
• Conditions under which atmospheres become hazardous
• Units of measurement used to express concentration of atmospheric contaminants (mg/cubic m. ppm, % v/v).
• Underpinning skills could include interpretation and communication of results of sampling

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres

FSA Entry Requirements:

• Language, literacy and numeracy requirements
• This unit may require the ability to read and correctly interpret complex P&ID’s; speak clearly and unambiguously in English; and to explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues.
• Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms
• Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly differentiate between high and low pressures and temperatures, voltages or masses

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a basic to moderate level of mobility, stamina, and dexterity, as most tasks involve standing, bending, and handling lightweight gas detection equipment.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Sit for classroom sessions and complete written or oral assessments.
• Stand and walk during simulated gas testing activities.
• Carry, inspect, and operate a portable gas detector, including connecting tubes and calibration gases.
• Bend or stoop to sample air at different levels inside a confined or open space.
• Record gas test results on a permit or test log.
• Clean, check, and return the gas detector to storage after use.

Key overall physical demands:

• Mobility and stamina – walking/standing in simulated work areas, bending for gas testing
• Dexterity and grip – operating gas detectors, connecting tubing, using calibration gases
• Tolerance – wearing basic PPE, working in simulated confined space or hazardous atmosphere scenarios
• Low–moderate manual handling – equipment is lightweight but requires controlled, repetitive use
