Santos Work Permit Procedure & Module 49 Gas Detection Training

• Applying for a permit
• Identifying the scope of the permit
• Preparing for the permitted work
• Working in accordance with an issued permit
• Common chemical asphyxiants, including hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and hydrogen sulphide
• Common irritants and corrosives, including chlorine, ammonia and acid bases
• Common flammable gases, including acetylene, petroleum, methane, ethane, propane and butane narcotics (explosive range, upper and lower explosive limits)
• Exposure standards (time weighted average, short term exposure limits, peak limitation values, examination of toxic effect at the level of a range of flammable gases)
• Conditions under which atmospheres become hazardous
• Units of measurement used to express concentration of atmospheric contaminants (mg/cubic m. ppm, % v/v).
• Underpinning skills could include interpretation and communication of results of sampling

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• MSMPER200 Work in accordance with an issued permit
• MSMWHS217 Gas test atmospheres

Pre-requisites:

Completion of Work Party Member (WPM) module, done on-line via the Santos portal. Must be completed and evidence provided PRIOR to course commencement. As per Santos - participants are unable to attend a Work Permit Procedure training course without having first completed the WPM module

FSA Entry Requirements:

• Language, literacy and numeracy requirements
• This unit may require the ability to read and correctly interpret complex P&ID’s; speak clearly and unambiguously in English; and to explain, describe and verify sometimes complex needs and issues.
• Writing is required to the level of completing workplace forms
• Numeracy is required to the level of being able to correctly differentiate between high and low pressures and temperatures, voltages or masses

Physical Requirements:

This combination course requires a moderate level of physical activity, mobility, and stamina, with the ability to participate in simulated workplace environments that involve permit-to-work procedures, lockout/tagout activities, and gas detection operations.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Move safely through simulated or operational work environments to conduct permit and gas testing activities (may involve uneven ground, stairs, or confined spaces).
• Stand and walk for extended periods while observing or performing practical exercises.
• Demonstrate the correct fitting and removal of isolation locks and tags, and handle gas detection equipment.
• Perform simulated gas testing tasks, including bending, reaching, or kneeling to access testing points.
• Wear and correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety boots, gloves, eye protection, and possibly respiratory protection.
• Communicate clearly with team members and supervisors regarding permit conditions, isolation status, and atmospheric test results.
• Complete written permit forms, gas test logs, and associated documentation accurately.

Key overall physical demands:

• Mobility to move through typical worksite areas and simulated hazardous environments.
• Fine motor control for attaching locks, operating testing instruments, and completing paperwork.
• Visual and auditory capacity to read gauges, observe indicators, and respond to alarms or instructions.
• Ability to stand, bend, or kneel for moderate durations during practical tasks.
• Stamina to remain alert and focused throughout simulated operational and safety activities.
