Standard 11 Generic Coal Mine Induction (Surface) Training

The Standard 11 Generic Coal Mine Induction - Surface training course is a mandatory training course for individuals seeking to work on Queensland coal mine sites. This nationally recognised course equips students with the essential safety knowledge and practical skills required to enter and work safely in surface coal mining operations.

This course covers the core competencies outlined in the Recognised Standard 11 - Training in Coal Mines issued by the Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ). It covers training in key areas of mine safety and hazard awareness, including:

Students will learn to:

• Identify and manage workplace hazards and risks
• Safely respond to emergencies
• Comply with site communication protocols and reporting procedures
• Demonstrate safe work practices relevant to coal mining environments
• Site safety rules and compliance expectations
• Environmental responsibilities in the mining context/li

On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• RIICOM201E Communicate in the workplace
• RIIERR205D Apply initial response first aid
• RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents
• RIIGOV201E Comply with site work processes / procedures
• RIIWHS201E Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
• RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control

FSA Entry Requirements:

• Must be over 18 years of age
• Must have access to a computer and have basic computer skills
• USI and sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills are required to complete the course
• Fitness to participate along with clothing and footwear appropriate to delivery site. This may include PPE

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a moderate to high level of stamina, mobility, strength, and dexterity, as it involves multiple practical emergency and workplace safety scenarios.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Walk, stand, and participate in site safety meetings and inspections.
• Hold and operate two-way radios for communication exercises.
• Complete Take 5s, hazard reports, and JSEA forms at the work site.
• Bend, stoop, and kneel for vehicle pre-start checks and tyre change activities (lifting a tyre ~15–20kg).
• Operate fire extinguishers (5–9kg) and fire blankets safely.
• Perform CPR for 2 minutes on adult and infant manikins, and apply basic first aid techniques.
• Complete incident reports, tag out faulty/used equipment, and participate in debriefs.

Key overall physical demands

• Mobility and stamina – walking, standing, kneeling, stooping, participating in multiple scenarios
• Manual handling – fire extinguisher (5–9kg), tyre/wheel (~15–20kg), tools, casualty handling (simulated)
• Strength and endurance – CPR, lifting tyres, extinguisher use
• Dexterity and grip – radios, AED, tools, bandages, extinguisher handles
• Tolerance – extended participation in outdoor or simulated mine site environments (heat, noise, PPE)
