Standard 11 Generic Coal Mine Induction (Underground) Training

The Standard 11 Generic Coal Mine Induction - Underground Course is a nationally recognised training course required for all personnel entering or working in Queensland's underground coal mining operations.

This course ensures students are equipped with the core safety competencies and knowledge required to operate safely and effectively in an underground mine environment. The Standard 11 Generic Coal Mine Induction (Surface) component is covered in addition to the Underground component of the training.

This course is aligned with the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 (QLD) and delivered in accordance with Recognised Standard 11 issued by Resources Safety and Health Queensland (RSHQ).

Students will gain knowledge and practical skills to:

• Identify and manage hazards and risks specific to underground mining
• Apply underground communication protocols
• Respond to emergencies in confined and hazardous conditions
• Comply with site safety procedures and legislation
• Demonstrate safe underground work practices and risk control measures

On successful completion of this course students will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• RIIRIS201E Conduct local risk control
• RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents
• RIIGOV201E Comply with site work processes/ procedures
• RIIWHS201D Work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures
• RIIERR205D Apply initial response first aid
• RIICOM201D Communicate in the workplace
• RIIERR203E Escape from hazardous situations unaided

FSA Entry Requirements:

• Must be over the age of 18 years
• Must have access to a computer and basic computer skills
• USI and sufficient language, literacy, numeracy and digital skills required to complete the course
• Fitness to participate along with clothing and footwear appropriate to delivery site. This may include PPE

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a moderate to high level of physical fitness, mobility, and situational awareness, as students undertake both theoretical and practical activities simulating underground coal mine environments.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Walk and move safely through underground or simulated underground areas, including uneven ground and confined spaces
• Crouch, kneel, bend, and stoop when inspecting equipment or navigating low-clearance areas
• Ascend and descend stairs and ladders and move through restricted access points or hatches
• Operate fire-fighting and first aid equipment during emergency simulations (e.g. extinguishers, fire blankets, CPR manikins)
• Demonstrate self-escape techniques from hazardous or low-visibility situations unaided (as required for RIIERR203E)
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including helmet, gloves, safety boots, high-visibility clothing, and self-rescuer devices for extended periods
• Participate actively in emergency response drills, including communication under pressure and assisting others to safety
• Complete written reports, forms, and documentation as part of assessment tasks

Key overall physical demands:

• Mobility and endurance to walk, climb, and manoeuvre in simulated underground conditions
• Balance and coordination when moving through confined, uneven, or dark environments
• Ability to work in enclosed or low-light conditions, maintaining calm and focus
• Manual handling capability for using fire equipment, lifting small loads, or assisting with emergency response tasks
• Clear verbal communication and radio use in simulated emergency and operational scenarios
