On successful completion of this program, participants will be awarded the following Nationally Recognised Units of Competency:

• PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation
• PUASAR024 Undertake road crash rescue

Pre-requisites:

HLTAID011 Provide first aid (or equivalent)
PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation (or equivalent) (delivered as part of the course)

FSA Entry Requirements:

• USI and Fitness to Participate
• Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course
• Enclosed footwear/appropriate fire rated safety boots and PPE clothing, eg. Fire protection/turnout uniform); Head and eye protection, gloves
• Evidence of each participant holding the required pre-requisite (HLTAID011) must be provided prior to entry into the course.

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a very high level of physical strength, stamina, and resilience, with the ability to work safely in complex and stressful rescue environments.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

• Wear full protective equipment (helmet, gloves, boots, eye/hearing protection).
• Lift, carry, and operate hydraulic rescue tools (15–20kg).
• Bend, kneel, and stoop to stabilise vehicles and access casualties.
• Remove doors, sides, roofs, and dashboards using hydraulic tools.
• Lift, drag, or carry simulated casualties (20–30kg mannequins) using stretchers or spine boards.
• Perform first aid, including CPR, in and around vehicles.
• Work in hot, noisy, and stressful simulated environments.
• Clean and stow rescue equipment after training.

Key overall physical demands

• Very high physical fitness required for sustained extrication and casualty handling
• Manual handling – hydraulic tools (15–20kg), stabilisation equipment, and casualties (20–30kg mannequins)
• Strength and stamina – repeated tool use, overhead work, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and casualty movement
• Mobility and agility – crawling, stooping, kneeling in and around vehicles
• Tolerance – heat, noise, glass, sharp edges, and stressful simulated crash environments
• Team coordination – working safely in rescue teams under time pressure
