New Training Course Launched – Certificate IV in Emergency Response Coordination (RII41319)

January 8, 2025 by Steve McLeod

After more than 12 months of development by FSA’s instructors, and industry validation through our networks, we have now launched a well-structured, engaging, and highly practical emergency response leadership training course for the resources industry. This course will be tailored with exercises based on surface mining or underground mining, to ensure that scenarios are based on the real life potential emergencies that participants may face as part of their role.

Our Certificate IV in Emergency Response Coordination (RII41319) is specifically tailored for experienced professionals in emergency response and rescue roles within the resources and infrastructure industries. This qualification is ideal for individuals who are already in emergency response roles and are seeking to take the next step into a leadership position.

Our target audience includes:

  • Emergency Response Team Leaders who are responsible for managing teams during high-stakes emergency situations.
  • Emergency Coordinators and Supervisors tasked with overseeing preparedness and response strategies across various emergency situations.
  • Captains of Emergency Response Teams (ERT) working within industrial or resource-based environments

Qualification Structure

The Certificate IV in Emergency Response Coordination (RII41319) is a comprehensive qualification that covers the knowledge and skills required to manage and lead emergency response teams. It blends leadership theory with practical emergency management techniques and scenarios, equipping graduates with the tools necessary to respond to and coordinate complex emergency situations.

Entry requirements require that you already hold your Provide Advanced First Aid certification and that participants have completed their Certificate III Emergency Response and Rescue qualification or Certificate III Public Safety (Firefighting and Emergency Operations). Ideally you will be working within the Resources Industry, allowing you to access your organisation’s documentation for safety management plans, emergency management plans, trigger response action plans and any additional documentation that you may require as part of your learning.

Throughout the qualification, you will also have access to online resources, including modules related to the Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System (AIIMS). This flexible learning approach ensures that you can balance your training with your work commitments.

1. Pre-Course Learning and Research Module: Before attending the in-person sessions, you will complete the online AIIMS Principles course along with pre-session assignments, designed to familiarise you with key emergency management documents from your organisation, such as the site safety management plan, state emergency management plans, and trigger response action plans. This research-based approach ensures you are already integrating the course material into your specific work context.
The pre-course workload is substantial, and you should allow approximately 3 – 6 months to complete this section of the training program. Your assignments need to be completed and submitted to your trainer at the commencement of your classroom sessions module.

2. Intensive Classroom Sessions Module: The core of the training consists of five days of intensive face-to-face classroom sessions. These sessions are designed to cover theory, practical skills building, and scenario-based activities, you will need to have already completed your Provide Advanced First Aid (HLTAID014) certificate and provide this to FSA. During these sessions, you will participate in:
• Guest Speaker Sessions: Hear from experienced professionals in critical incident management, natural disasters, and operational leadership.
• Practical Skills Training: Learn and practice emergency management skills in a controlled environment using live fire ground, rescue equipment, and other essential PPE.
Classroom learning is structured to encourage active participation, with small group sizes of no more than ten students. This ensures you receive personalised attention and can engage in hands-on activities and discussions. This will also ensure that learners can learn from their peers in a group setting and observe their peers working through multiple scenarios.

3. Post-Course Module: After completing the classroom component, you will be required to submit a post-course assignment within three months. This assignment involves reviewing the pre-course assignments, identifying gaps, and updating your reports based on the knowledge gained during the training. You will also be asked to develop a plan to implement changes to your current systems and evaluate their impact.
Post course assignment to be submitted within 3 months of the completion of classroom session. FSA trainers will be available to provide support as required and on request for all modules of your training program.
