15 Years of Tailored Emergency Response Training at BlueScope Steel

Our Experience With Bluescope Steel

Fast Facts:

  • We have provided tailored Emergency Response Team training, Fire Warden training, Height Safety training, and Occupational First Aid training for over 15 years.
  • We have tailored our emergency response training delivery and training materials to the specific emergency procedures and policies from BlueScope Steel, training over 500 people.
  • We have trained new emergency response team members from zero, delivering an 8-day rookies course that included units from the Cert III Emergency Response and Rescue training course.
  • FSA has been working with Bluescope Steel for over 15 years, starting with the creation of a nationally recognised, tailored fire warden and emergency response team (ERT) training course specific to the site’s hazards.
  • We conducted several site tours to understand and document local hazards, including very large dangerous goods storage facilities, railways, mobile plant, shipping terminals, cranes, vehicle traffic, and wildfire risks.

Training to Meet Specific Site Hazards

FSA has worked closely with Bluescope Steel to ensure that training is tailored to the unique challenges and risks faced by their emergency response team. The training covered everything from fire safety to first aid, vertical rescue, and more. FSA took the time to review the site’s specific hazards, safety systems, and emergency procedures to ensure that the training was directly relevant and effective.

By conducting several site tours and engaging with the Bluescope team, we gained in-depth knowledge of the potential risks, such as large dangerous goods storage, shipping terminals, cranes, and mobile plant. This helped in designing an efficient and tailored response plan for all emergency scenarios.

Comprehensive Training and Development

One of the standout features of our work with Bluescope Steel is the creation of an 8-day rookie course for emergency response team members. This course covered a wide array of critical skills, such as:

  • Fire safety and fire extinguisher use
  • Rescue operations (including vertical and confined space rescue)
  • First response to fire incidents
  • Medical emergency response and first aid

The course was designed specifically to address the unique hazards faced by the Bluescope Steel staff, ensuring that they are well-prepared to act in the event of an emergency. We also included real-world emergency scenarios to provide hands-on experience, enhancing the effectiveness of the training.

Furthermore, our team delivered training to ensure the smooth integration of Bluescope Steel’s emergency management procedures. This training helps foster a proactive safety culture across their manufacturing operations.

Emergency Response and Safety Training Delivery

FSA delivered training both in the classroom and on-site, providing a hands-on approach to emergency response. The site-specific training was delivered using Bluescope Steel’s emergency management procedures, ensuring that the emergency response team could respond effectively to a variety of scenarios. Our trainers, all of whom have real-world emergency services experience, helped ensure that participants were confident and capable in emergency situations.

Additionally, the training included practical assessments, simulated drills, and safety checks, which allowed participants to demonstrate their skills in real-time situations. This dynamic training approach helped ensure that the emergency response teams were able to act quickly and effectively in emergencies.
