Safety Training for High-Risk Mining Operations

Middlemount Coal operates in Queensland’s Bowen Basin, one of Australia’s most active mining regions. Due to the high-risk nature of coal mining, stringent safety measures are required to protect workers from hazards such as confined spaces, fire risks, and working at heights. Fire and Safety Australia (FSA) has partnered with Middlemount Coal to deliver industry-specific training that enhances workforce safety and ensures compliance with mining regulations.

Comprehensive Safety Training Solutions

FSA provided Middlemount Coal personnel with the following training programs:

  • Confined Space Entry and Rescue Training
  • Height Safety and Rescue Training
  • Fire Safety and Fire Warden Training
  • Emergency Response Team (ERT) Training
  • Gas Detection and Breathing Apparatus Training

Additionally, FSA has conducted specialised training programs, including:

  • Conduct Fire Team Operations
  • Vertical Rescue
  • Road Accident Rescue
  • Occupational First Aid
  • Drug & Alcohol Testing
  • Hazmat Training

On-Site and Flexible Training Delivery

To accommodate the demanding schedules of Middlemount Coal’s workforce, FSA provided training both on-site and at regional training centres. On-site training allowed workers to practice safety procedures in their actual work environment, reinforcing site-specific hazard awareness and compliance. Off-site training was also available for FIFO workers and those on rotating shifts, ensuring that all personnel had access to critical safety training.

FSA also provided ad-hoc emergency services officers (ESOs) to fill ESO coverage gaps as required. Additionally, FSA supported Middlemount Coal during its transition to a Volunteer Emergency Response Team (ERT) system by providing rostered ESOs to ensure emergency coverage and rapid response times.

Developing Middlemount’s Emergency Response Team

FSA played a crucial role in developing the Middlemount Coal Emergency Response Team by delivering Certificate III Mines Rescue Training. Fully qualified ERT personnel carried the dual responsibility of delivering nationally accredited rescue training while fulfilling duties as Emergency Response Team members. This strategic approach allowed Middlemount Coal to combine its training budget with ERT operations, resulting in significant cost savings while accelerating the Cert III Mines Rescue Training over a 12-week block.

FSA has a strong belief in providing solutions based upon our client’s needs, and Middlemount Coal is a prime example of how FSA breaks new ground in adding value to our services. FSA ERT/Trainers enjoyed the challenge of bringing the Middlemount Emergency Response Team to their goal of achieving Certificate III in Mines Rescue, helping them develop into a high-quality Emergency Response Unit. This initiative culminated in Middlemount Coal’s first-ever regional mines rescue competition, where they proudly wore FSA’s corporate logo.

Enhancing Workplace Safety and Compliance

By integrating real-world mining hazards into the training, FSA has helped Middlemount Coal strengthen its safety culture and improve regulatory compliance. Our training has played a critical role in reducing workplace incidents and ensuring that employees are prepared to respond effectively to emergencies.
