Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • USI
  • Fitness to participate
  • Appropriate safety footwear, long pants, long sleeves
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires a basic to moderate level of mobility and dexterity, with most tasks involving safe handling of equipment and accurate recording rather than heavy physical exertion.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

  • Wear basic PPE such as gloves, helmet, safety glasses, and respiratory protection if required.
  • Carry and operate a small handheld gas detector.
  • Bend, stoop, and reach when testing confined space openings or work areas.
  • Read detector displays and record results on workplace forms or permits.
  • Communicate gas test results clearly to supervisors and work teams.
  • Clean, charge, and store the gas detector after use

  • Mobility to walk, bend, stoop, and reach when testing confined or elevated areas
  • Light manual handling – gas detectors are small and lightweight
  • Dexterity for pressing controls, seals, and recording readings
  • Tolerance for PPE use (respiratory protection, gloves, safety glasses)
  • Communication and reporting to convey results and safety status to team
  • Administrative tasks – completing permits, logs, and reports
