Under section 72 of the ACT WHS Act 2011, an employer, if requested, must allow an elected HSR to attend a HSR training course that is approved by the regulator (WorkSafe ACT) and chosen by the HSR in consultation with their employer. Fire & Safety Australia is approved by WorkSafe ACT to deliver the ACT HSR Initial & Refresher Training Courses.

Course Content

  • WHS legislative framework and its relationship to the HSR.
  • Key parties, legislative obligations and duties.
  • The role, function and powers of a health and safety representative.
  • The role of a health and safety representative within their work group including, participation in the resolution of work health and safety issues, issuing of Provisional Improvement Notices and directing cessation of unsafe work.

Prerequisites and Entry Requirements

Pre-Requisites:

Photo ID must be presented to the trainer at the commencement of the course, as per SafeWork ACT Conditions of Approval.

FSA Entry Requirements:

  • Fitness to participate
  • Enclosed footwear
  • Sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to complete the course

Physical Requirements:

This course requires only a basic level of mobility, stamina, and communication skills, as the focus is on theory, consultation, and representation under WHS / OHS laws.

To successfully complete this course, you will need to be physically able to:

  • Sit for extended periods during classroom sessions and presentations.
  • Take part in group discussions, case studies, and role-play activities.
  • Read course notes and complete written or typed workbook and assessment activities.
  • Walk short distances and bend or stoop when participating in a workplace inspection activity.
  • Speak clearly and listen actively when presenting findings or negotiating during group exercises.

Overall: Physical requirements are minimal, limited to light mobility, sitting for extended periods, and active participation in communication-based activities. Adjustments can be made for accessibility needs.
